Crowns, Onlays and Bridges
Crowns and Onlays
Sometimes, fillings are not strong enough to restore your tooth and allow it to function regularly.
Crowns and Onlays are made out of materials that are stronger than regular filling materials and may be appropriate for heavily damaged teeth.
Some dentists, like us at Method Dental, use an Australian Dental Laboratory to make their crowns out of strong ceramic materials. Be wary of dentists who outsource their crowns to overseas dental laboratories as you may not be able to guarantee what materials the products contain or whether the correct infection control procedures have been followed.
The benefits are:
- Crowns and Onlays normally last longer than fillings
- They are stronger and more durable
- They may look more aesthetically pleasing
- They may have a more natural contour and feel better in the mouth
Bridges
Bridges are prosthetic devices which are fitted to your existing teeth to replace missing teeth. They are generally made out of the same strong materials that we use to make dental crowns.
They are usually strong, durable and can look very life-like. However, they cannot necessarily be used in every situation where there is a missing tooth.
They can also be somewhat difficult to clean but they are far more comfortable than dentures.
Bridges are just one of your options to replace your missing teeth - read more about dental implants and dentures here.
